Federal Gov’t ‘penny pinching’ over Indigenous legal aid

Linda Lavarch has told a meeting of state Attorney Generals in Darwin this week that a federal restructure of Indigenous legal aid last year has left some clients waiting up to nine months without a trial. Some meet lawyers for the first time when they arrive at court. Her comments follow allegations last year that some Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients were pleading guilty due to lack of legal representation.
