In Victoria a battle is raging over a pipeline that will carry water from the Goulburn River System to the Sugarloaf Reservoir that supplies Melbourne with water. The Sugarloaf Pipeline is part of the Victorian Government’s overall plan to conserve water within the State. It feeds into the one billion dollar Food Bowl Modernisation Project, that aims to “save” water lost within the current irrigation system. According to farmers, however, the region is under strain from the drought, and there are no “savings” to be made.
