Evidence Act may allow protection of journos’ sources

A new paper released by the Australian Law Reform Commission has proposed a uniform national evidence act, and changes to privileges so as to accord journalists the right to protect the identity of their sources. Releasing the paper on Monday, the ALRC was adamant that Australia would soon have a National Evidence Act, and that journalists would have the protection that many have proposed since three journalists were jailed in the early 1990’s. However, the proposed privilege for journalists and their sources comes with some conditions. Charles Gregory explains further.
