The latest European unemployment figures have been just released and the numbers are not good. With over 18 million without work, unemployment in the 17-country Eurozone is at its highest ever. But why is unemployment significantly higher in some countries than others and how do the European people feel as the economic crisis worsens and work becomes harder and harder to find.

Dr Bruno Mascitelli is a senior lecturer in European Studies at Swinburne University of Technology. He spent 20 years working in Milan and explains why social differences across Europe are at the heart of the continent’s economic divide.
