The rate of suicide in Australian elderly men is increasing and there is concern that there are not enough services provided to older people suffering from depression. The Australian bureau of Statistic reports that elderly men commit suicide at three times the national rate in Australia. Professionals working in the field say it’s not just a lack of age-appropriate services but also a lack of awareness amongst professionals working with older people.

They say that services  provided for depression and suicide are marketed more to younger people. Telephone counselling, the most common service , can be inappropriate for older people with loss hearing and other aging related illness.
