Antarctic explorer Sir Douglas Mawson is considered a hero by many. Famed for his trek to the South Magnetic Pole in 1912, Mawson survived after losing two of his party by strict rationing and, eventually, killing and eating his dogs. The idealised view of the man and his adventure, however, is being challenged following the emergence of a diary by fellow traveller, Cecil Madigan.

Madigan’s record of the journey reveals a very different side of Mawson. One that was prepared to compromise the safety of the men on the expedition, in order to save himself.
