Strongyloides, a parasitic disease has infected a large amount of people in Aboriginal communities across Northern Australia. The cause, a two-millimeter worm, which breeds in moist soil and feces, burrows into unsuspecting victim’s skin and lives in the small intestine until treated. Queensland’s National Strongyloides Working Group chairperson, Professor Rick Speare said the people of Woorabinda have participated in a project of education and treatment, which has seen huge success. Strongyloides project officer for the Aboriginal resource and development service in the Northern Territory, Doctor Jenny Shield has called for federal action.
