There are hundreds of Aboriginal languages existing in Australia, but with education resources dwindling, many are becoming extinct. This is where community radio steps in; it’s now become a trend for Indigenous DJs to train up at media schools at take valuable broadcasting skills back to remote Australia and keep languages alive. Ben Warren is a lecturer at the Bachelor Institute, 100km south of Darwin. He tells The Wire’s Alex Parry about his challenges as a teacher, believing the best way for Indigenous people to learn is through someone of the same culture. However, manager of CAAMA Radio in Central Australia, Jim Remedio, believes they should be open to learn skills from as many different sources as possible.
