Indigenous juveniles are being given harsher sentencing in Australian courts, when diversionary measures such as community service would be just as effective – a new inquiry shows. The Australian Institute of Criminology is calling for courts (particularly in the Northern Territories) to explore alternatives to immediate jail sentencing.
