The horror of living in a detention centre seems to have taken its toll this week, with the news of four attempted suicides. It has once again raised concerns over the impact that detention can have on mental health. Jack Smit, a social worker of detainee support group, Project SafeCom says it is appalling and long term detention makes you “as mad as a hatter”. Psychiatrist Dr John Jureidini, argues that the treatment provided to detainees with mental health issues are a complete waste of time and unless detainees are removed from detention centres the situation will not change.
