Cross-media ownership concerns flagged

While Industrial Relations changes grab the media limelight, the other big reform that the Liberal government has been waiting to pass through the senate has received little attention. The relaxation of cross-media laws has long been a Liberal goal, but in the past, determined opposition from both politicians and journalists has prevented them from getting it through. That’s all set to change as the coalition takes control, and although the Communications Minister Helen Coonan hasn’t detailed any plans, Prime Minister Howard has signalled his intent to reintroduce the changes. The relaxation of ownership laws could mean new business opportunities and more resources, but it could further compromise the diversity of viewpoints and our access to information. Bill Birtles spoke to Professor David Flint, the former chairman of both the Australian Broadcasting Authority and the Australian Press Council, whose an advocate of the changes.
