A bill attempting to restrict late-term abortion access was voted down in South Australia’s Upper House last night, seeing it out numbered 11-8.

Women’s reproductive rights have been pushed back into the spotlight for the second time in just under a year. Legislation introduced by MLC, Fair Go for Australians leader, Sarah Games attempted to wind back late term abortion access to 22 weeks and six days.

The move sparked fierce debate on both sides with rallies emerging across the city in recent weeks.

While laws in SA allow abortions after 23 weeks with approval of two doctors if the mothers physical or mental health is at significant risk – Games’ proposal would have removed these considerations – a prospect heavily opposed by pro-choice advocates.
