While this year’s Closing the Gap report revealed much Indigenous Australian disadvantage is still occurring there are some positive figures regarding students attending university.

From 2001 to 2011 the total amount of Aboriginal students has risen by over 20 %.

However, the attendance numbers for non-Aboriginal students has also increased so the proportion of total university students has remained at just over 1 %.

The Closing the Gap report 2017 has revealed school attendance for Indigenous students decreases if students live in remote areas, making it more difficult for disadvantaged Indigenous students to attend university.

But education experts are hopeful more education and engagement at an early learning and high school level will help increase Indigenous Australian university student numbers in the future.
