Climate change and coal
Earlier today a Bali Climate Declaration signed by over 200 of the worlds top scientists was presented to the UN Climate Change Summit. The deceleration says that their must be at least a 50 per cent decrease in carbon emissions by 2050, to keep the rise in global temperature below 2 degrees. A rise above 2 degrees is enough to cause specie extinction and melt polar ice caps causing rising sea-level. Coal is one of the biggest producers of carbon emissions in Australia and Leading Australian former CISRO scientist and Climate Consult Research Fellow at Monash University Dr GRAHAM PILMELA believes over time new energy generating technologies need to start taking over from fuel to keep climate change under control. These views contrast with Paul Colley national research director of the Construction mining and energy union who believes that Coal still the most valuable energy resource.
