Should church leaders be able to comment on political matters being debated by the country’s politicians? And by the same token, should we be concerned when politicians start expressing their views on religion and matters like abortion? In recent years, these issues have caused concern across the country, with exponents of various religions squaring off against those with secular views about the relationship between church and state. Well tonight and tomorrow in Sydney, these topics will the subject of further hot debate. A series of lectures, hosted by the New College at the University of New South Wales, will look at the role of State and Church in society. Kicking off tonight will be a debate between Moore Theological College lecturer Dr Andrew Cameron, former National Party leader, John Anderson and the ALP’s Kevin Rudd. Dr Cameron, from Moore Theological College, spoke earlier with Erica Vowles. Erica began by asking him why he thought there had been so much controversy about Church and State issues under the Howard government.
