On Christmas Island the number of refugees and detention centre workers already well outnumbers the residential population and building work is beginning on expanding detention facilities Shire President Gordon Thomson says locals are in an uproar but more because the government hasn’t yet explained to them what’s happening next. He says they are generally accepting that the refugees are genuine and that they need to offer them asylum.
