Tensions between China and Japan are escalating as anti-Japanese protests in China move into their third day. The Chinese have been protesting against Japan’s approval of a history textbook which whitewashes atrocities carried out by the Japanese during the second world war. Windows have been smashed at the Japanese Embassy in Beijing, Japanese Nationals have been beaten, and there are calls to boycott Japanese products. Today, Japan announced it will issue permits to allow gas drilling in a disputed area of the East China Sea. It is believed this decision will further ignite hostilities between the two nations. Doctor David Lockwood of Flinders University spoke with Samantha Regione about the ongoing tensions.
