China aid raises debt fear

China is now the third largest donor to the Pacific Island region behind the US and Australia. Figures, released by the Lowy Institute this week, show China pledged around 210 million US dollars to the Pacific Islands in 2009. A large portion of these funds were loans, rather than grants, raising concern that some countries will take on too much debt and be unable to repay it.
