Chavel closure highlights decline of indie films
Some independent film makers in Sydney have expressed concerns for their future livelihoods, after the Chauvel cinema announced its closure at the end of the month. The Chauvel is known around Australia for its unique screenings that include art house, cultural, experimental and cinemateque style programming. Marcelle Hoff, from the City of Sydney Council tabled a motion in the Council meeting on Monday, asking for subsidies for the new operator of the Chauvel. Hoff made the condition that any potential new manager will maintain Chauvel’s traditional style that includes art house and new Australian films. Sydney is the only capital city in Australia that doesn’t have government funded independent cinema. Hagar Cohen reports.
