The media reform package planned by the government has long been expected to make media concentraion in this country more pronounced than ever. The Prime Minister this week announced that the reforms would be “reined in” but according to meddia lecturer from Swinburne University John Schwarz the only bits being removed from the planned package are the ones that may have retained some diversity and choice for the public. There now won’t be an extra free to air channel and digital multi casting won’t be happening, whereas media owners will no longer be restricted by cross-media and foreign ownership laws.
