Often in war it is difficult to get a handle on the impact that hostilities have on civilians. Marla Rubicka, a 27-year-old California woman, has been working in Iraq during the conflict to do just that. Sadly and ironically, her life was claimed over the weekend, meeting a similar fate to many Iraqi civilians. She was the innocent bystander to a car bomb attack. Marla was the founder of the Campaign for Innocent Victims in Conflict, and initially worked in Afghanistan after the commencement of the US-led invasion. In Iraq, her some of work revolved around gathering crucial data on the ordinary civilians whose lives have been cut short by the Iraq war. Justin Alexander, a friend of Marla’s, is a volunteer currently working in Iraq with the Christian Peace Maker Teams. In the past year he has had four of his friend die in similar circumstances.
