Calls to widen the scope of the cashless welfare card scheme that’s been trialed in parts of Queensland, New South Wales and Western Australia have the support of Senator Jacqui Lambie.

But Labor’s Linda Burney and the Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS) won’t join her, saying that the government’s trials haven’t been a success, and that the suggestion to also drug test welfare recipients is insensitive and out of the question.

But could it all be convenient timing to distract from calls to raise Newstart?
