A South African cardinal has called on the Governments of Africa to take a tougher stand against Robert Mugabe’s regime in Zimbabwe. Cardinal Wilfred Napier is the archbishop of Durban in South Africa and the president of the Southern African Catholic Bishops conference. He recently visit Zimbabwe, during “Operation Clean Up”, a program of hosue demolitions rolled out by the Zimbabwean government again mainly political opponents. Mugabe claimed the move aimed to crack down on illegal housing in shanty towns, however it is estimated that at least 700,000 people have been made homeless by the move. Currently in Australia, Cardinal Napier spoke earlier today with Erica Vowles about the Mugabe regime in Zimbabwe, and what the African community and the world must do to bring it down. Here he recalls what he saw during his visit to Zimbabwe in July.
