Can torture ever be justified?
Torture – it’s the use of coercive force to obtain information that has been demonised by war. The reality of torture being rational is a controversial question for both critics and scholars alike. Paris Aristotle is the director of an association dedicated to counselling survivors of torture and will be speaking at a forum discussing it’s justification. He says there is no way the use of torture can be defended. Meanwhile Rodney Allen, a retired philosophy lecturer who will also be speaking at the forum, doesn’t completely disprove of the idea. He says the use of coercive force to obtain vital information can be justified but only in circumstances involving the safety of thousands and if there is 100% certainty the suspect has relevant information.
