The Immigration Minister, Kevin Andrews, has maintained today that he will be unable to reveal the evidence that prompted him to cancel the visa of Dr Mohamaed Haneef, saying to do so would jeopardize the ongoing police investigation. It had earlier been suggested that he would release the info. However, one observer has noted that a third way exists – that being that the evidence used in the character test could have been reviewed in a closed court by a judge. And, calls are now growing for a review of the character test component of the Migration Act of 1958 that enabled Dr Haneef to be deported. Swinbourne University Researcher Glen Nicholls discussed his concerns with the 1958 Migration Act, in relation to the Haneef case.
