Calls for jailed West Papuan activists to be released

Five men from the Indonesian province of West Papua have been charged with treason and sentenced to three years in prison for organising a pro-independence meeting last year. Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch are calling for the prisoners to be released.

Advocacy groups in Australia have written to the new Foreign Minister Bob Carr, urging him to end the government’s long-standing silence on Indonesia’s human rights record.
