Calls for Central Australian inquest into 19 petrol sniffing deaths
A Central Australian Youth organization says it’s time for an inquest into a wide range of petrol-sniffing related deaths in the Northern Territory. Tristan Ray Co-Coordinator of the Central Australian Youth Link-Up Service says recommendations from past inquests have given governments and other agencies a tool which they could use to improve the system. Mr. Ray says his organization, CAYLUS, has written to the NT coroner requesting an inquest into 19 deaths believed to be petrol related. He says more accurate information about the extent of inhalant abuse would help them create a suitable structure, capable of providing an appropriate response. As yet, no official response to the letter from the Coroner’s office, but Mr Ray says the early signs are promising.
