The 60 year anniversary of the end of World War II has just been marked, by the opening a new Holocaust memorial in Berlin. In honour of Europe’s murdered Jews, its 2,700 stone slabs cover a vast patch of land near the Brandenburg Gate. Although controversial, it was described at the opening ceremony as a symbol of Germany now “facing up to its history”. George Grojnowski hopes so. A 78-year-old Polish survivor of the Holocaust, he spent from the age of 14 to18 in Nazi work camps, before coming to Australia in 1949. Speaking at a forum in Sydney this week, he explained why the Holocaust can never be forgotten. Anja Kueppers reports.
