NT Chief Minister Natasha Fyles announced the provisional go-ahead for gas mining in the Beetaloo basin today.
After an independent enquiry topped off a 5 year investigation process one of the biggest gas fields in the world – 28 thousand square kilometres and an estimated potential 500 trillion cubic feet of gas, the process has given a qualified green light to the projects.
Indigenous people are to be given power of veto over individual projects, but many environmentalists are disturbed at opening up new gas fields which climate scientists aim to prevent.
