Thomas Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence has often been quoted by black emancipation groups and Barack Obama has continued this legacy. During his election campaign Obama made use of American history ranging from Jefferson, Lincoln, and Franklin Roosevelt, to the Civil Rights movement. This constitutes another chapter in black leaders using American history, especially the Declaration, to justify their political standpoint. Interveiwed on this topic was Professor Annette Gordon-Reed, Who has just be awarded the Pulitzer Prize for History for her book “The Hemingses of Monticello: An American Family”. She will be speaking on the 22nd of April from 6.30 pm, at the Seymore Centre as part of the Sydney University Ideas Program.
