Breed specific legislation is purported to be in the name of community safety, however this is not the picture painted by animal rights groups across Australia who are campaigning agaist it. BSL declares entire breeds of dog as dangerous and takes steps to outlaw them, but interest groups say the issue is clouded by inaccurate breed identification and that the focus should be on education of both dogs and their owners.

There is no scientific evidence of its effectiveness in preventing or reducing dog attacks, as well as a stamp of disapproval from both the RSPCA and Australian Veterinary Association. The resounding response from interest groups is that breed specific legislation will only drive an industry underground.
