Australia’s working poor number close to one million

A new submission to the Fair Pay Commission has revealed that increasing numbers of people earning a minimum wage are struggling to get by. And its now estimated that almost one million people make up the working poor in Australia, a term referring to those that are living below the poverty line despite being in paid employment and are increasingly relying on charities to survive. Michelle Burrell from the New South Wales Council of Social service or NCOSS says that the minimum wage must be increased in order to ease their financial pressures.
