The prison population in Australia is at its highest recorded level.

Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) shows the number of people incarcerated has grown by more than 15,000 people over ten years.

Indigenous Australians are over-represented in these figures and there has been a surge in the number of women entering the criminal justice system.
