The image of Antarctica as a vast wilderness and a pole of peace could well change in the future to a scene where the icy continent is at the centre of a resource grab by nations like China and Russia. That’s a scenario outlined in a recent Lowy Institute report that recommends Australia needs to do more to strengthen its national security approach to Antarctica. But experts disagree on the likelihood and need for Australia to protect itself from such a scenario.
