Australia’s imprisonment rate reaches record high

Experts say Australia is currently on track to have the second-highest jail population after the United States. At the moment, we imprison roughly 186 people per 100’000, double our historical average. The issue appears to stem from a sentencing system which is too harsh on minor offenders, and a lack of research into the effects high prison rates can have on a community.
