Fire experts have warned that Australian grasslands are drying out, carpeting the land with kindling. The rainy winter meant that grass grew in abundance across central Australia. But now the grassy plains could encourage the spread of fire as they dry in the coming months.

Scientists from CSIRO say that climate change could be responsible for these more extreme cycles of heavy rain followed by long, dry conditions.
