A new Monash University report says military training techniques used by Australian armed forces are dangerously similar to those used to train torturers. The report says bonding exercises and dehumanising techniques used to train Australian soldiers undermine their ability to assess the morality of the orders they’re given. The report’s author Jessica Wolfendale says soldiers are being taught to kill in real life in the same way as if they were doing it in a computer game. But Neil James from the Australian Defence Association has dismissed the report as laughable.
