Australia an ‘oasis’ for sharks and rays, as global numbers steadily decrease

A new report on the global status of sharks, rays and chimaera fish reveals most species are facing extinction due to overfishing. 

The study developed by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature reveals the demand for shark and ray meat has almost doubled over the past two decades. 

While their population numbers are declining in the world’s overall ecosystem, Australia remains an oasis.
