Twenty four people have been killed in Cairo in a chaotic episode of violence. A peaceful protest by Coptic Christians was eventually met by a military crackdown, and acts of sectarian violence.

Amongst the chaos, some muslim residents came out to support the Coptic Christians in a show of interfaith solidarity in opposition to the military. Others groups turned up to support the military crackdown. Some observers are concerned that the military will use the violent episode to crack down further on civil liberties and delay the transition towards democracy.
