Traffic came to a standstill in Melbourne’s city centre this morning, as hundreds of taxi drivers demanded increased security. The angry drivers launched a protest after the stabbing of a twenty-three year old Indian driver in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Alice Monfries spoke to Michael Jools from the Taxi Drivers Association about the build-up to the strike and the changes that the cabbies are protesting for. The taxi drivers have since ended their city blockade, after the government agreed this afternoon to install safety screens and introduce prepaid fares for travel between 10pm and 5am.
