World War One was the first time that war photographers got a serious chance to record the horrors of battle. An exhibition opening in Adelaide and touring the country is an unusual record of Gallipoli as seen by the Turks. The Australian War Museum came across the pictures, taken by a German photographer and kept by his Turkish interpreter, only a few years ago. The Museum’s Jude Savage says the pictures are not only beautiful and a precious record of a long ago time but they’ve also contributed to a lot more understanding between Australia and Turkey.
