A bill before the Fijian Parliament at the moment could let George Speight and others involved in his year 2000 coup off the hook. The bill would allow coup plotters to seek amnesties if they were deemed to have acted for political reasons, and Speight, who is serving a life sentence for treason, is among those who could be freed. The President of the Law Council of Australia John North says the bill could undermine the judiciary and threaten the separation of powers in the country.
