Federal cabinet met today to review the policy of long-term detention for asylum seekers. While the Howard government maintains its the hardline approach is deterring people smugglers, critics argue that the large numbers of people still languish in detention for three years or more. The cabinet discussions are specifically related to the release of 120 long-term detainees, of whom 30 are already having their cases reviewed. However, while the possibility exists that these detainees could be released, they are unlikely to be granted permanent visas, a move which would not only allow them to stay in the country in the long term, but would also grant them access to work and medicare. Margaret Piper, Executive Director of the Refugee Council of Australia, spoke to Bill Birtles about the alternative policies that could be used for long-term detainees.
