Northern Territorian Aboriginal singer/songwriter Allyson Mills has opened concerts for Elton John, Tina Turner, Charlie Pride and Pete Murray. However, it is her highly regarded Great Uncle Valentine Bynoe McGinness who inspired Ali deeply with his Kriol version of Waltzing Matilda. Ali has just released her version of the Australian classic and says what they have done is “claim a version of a white Australian song, and to say – we love it! We want to share with Australia our version of this wonderful song”. Faith Valencia tracked Ali down to Sydney where this lovely lady took some time out of her busy schedule to talk to The Wire.
