Victorian community legal centres have come out and said in a new report that Africans, both migrants and Australian born, are being racially taunted and physically attacked by Victorian Police. But Victorian police say the report does not tell the full story and while they acknowledge the dealings with the African community needs more work, they describe the relationship as “effective.” The paper is based on statements made young Africans telling of their experiences with police. They claim that officers engage in name calling, take advantage of their stop-and-search powers and in one instance allegedly took off their uniforms to attack a group of Africans in a park.
