The trial of Japan’s most infamous man has just finished in Tokyo with Shoko Asahara being sentenced to death. Asahara was the Guru of the Aum Supreme Truth Cult, and believed in The Apocalypse… This belief culminated in a vicious chemical attack on the Tokyo Subway System in 1995 because Asahara believed if he could precipitate the apocalypse, he would be installed in his rightful place as Ruler of the World. The gas attacks killed ten people, injured thousands, and shocked Japan to its core. Although the trials for Aum members have now finished, the appeals will drag on for years. Japanese Author Rei Kimura has written a book about AUM called Japan’s Unholy Sect. Jay Lamey asked her about Shoko Asahara’s decision to appeal.
