South Australia was the first state to bring in legislation to outlaw discrimination against women – 35 years ago this week. It took ten more years for the law to be adopted federally Last night in Adelaide there was a celebration and a debate to honour the occasion. Journalist Tory Shepherd says younger feminists are still fighting many issues of discrimination but that since the F word went out of fashion they aren’t united in the same way as in the 70’s. Anne Levy was one of a small number of female parliamentarians when the legislation went through in 1975. She says equality may be legal but there are still not enough women in positions of power.
