Saturday’s election was a landslide victory for Labor, dramatically increasing their majority in the 25 seat Legislative Assembly, by 6 and reducing the once-powerful Country Liberal Party to four seats. ABC presenter and journalist Barbara McCarthy has been elected in the seat of Arnhem, after Labor Deputy John Ah Kit resigned due to ill health. Arnhem being a largely Indigenous and remote electorate, Ms McCarthy says she won’t rule out supporting the commonwealth’s much-vaunted Shared Responsibility Agreements. Former ATSIC Commissioner from Central Australia, Alison Anderson has successfully pushed CLP Aboriginal Affairs spokesman John Elferink from the seat of MacDonnell.
