Calls for Arroyo to go
In the Philippines, President Gloria Arroyo has managed to stay in charge despite calls for her to go. Opposition groups have been pushing for her resignation since audio tapes were released to the press that appear to have the President asking an electoral official to fix last May’s election. Three hours of the tapes have been uncovered but allegedly there is more audio missing. Several parliamentary inquiries into the scandal are underway but so far it looks like President Arroyo has come out on top. Despite weekly public protests some analysts are arguing that Filipino’s are unwilling to hit the streets again because they’ve already forced the resignations of Arroyo’s predecesors Ferdinand Marcos and Joseph Estrada. Michael Atkin spoke to Alexander Remollino, spokesperson for Indymedia Philippines about the controversy.
