University cuts – Minister wants accountability
Federal Education Minister Jason Clare has proposed new changes to ensure Australian universities are accountable and remain transparent in their decision making.
Universities would be required to report annually on topics such as the outcomes of certain meetings, how they are managing their funds, the composition of their governing body as well as any external roles the vice-chancellor may assume. If a university were to refuse to disclose any of these details, they must explain why they refuse to, to avoid potential sanctions.
These new proposals come after several universities cut funding across the board, removing certain degrees on offer and laying off several staff. A notable example was the UTS governing body spending several thousands on an alumni trip amidst fund cutting.
Clare hopes that these reforms ensure universities maintain trust amongst staff, students and the wider public, “If you don’t think there are challenges in university governance, you’ve been living under a rock”, he said. “These are important reforms that help make sure our universities meet the standards their students, staff and whole communities expect.”
It is yet to be confirmed when these new changes will come into effect.
